There is something for everyone in Cozumel, Mexico, though it is virtually a mecca for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts from around the world. The sunken caverns around Mexico's largest island make it a hot spot for scuba divers and snorkelers looking to escape the bustle of neighboring Cancun. The fine, unpretentious private beach homes, hotels and resorts of Cozumel deliver rest, relaxation and respite. Just 12 miles from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel offers sandy white beaches, crystal-clear water and a year-round Caribbean climate. Because Cozumel is renowned for its scuba diving and snorkeling, it is also a popular destination for cruise ships. Much of the island is undeveloped jungle, full of wildlife like tropical birds and reptiles. (You'll find restaurants, bars, and other amenities in San Miguel de Cozumel, the island's only town.) Don't miss Cozumel's Mayan ruins and bright coral reefs.
As one of the world’s top diving destinations, there is a plethora of dive shops or independent dive operators on the Island. Diving services, custom charters, afternoon dives and night dives, diving/accommodation packages, and equipment rental make for plenty of choices. Most operators also offer instructional services from Open Water to advanced levels of certification and specialty courses.
Cozumel boasts some excellent shallow reefs for gazing at the abundant sea life and is world famous for is its beauty below the waves. Being situated along a section of a very long coral reef system, with several sections of the reef in some of the shallow areas along the west coast of Cozumel supports a great variety of fish, rays, turtles and eels, and all kinds of other marine life at various depths. You can snorkel right off the beach or the Fury Catamaran will take you on a fun and memorable experience sampling a few different reefs, a stop at the beach for a lunch buffet and banana boat rides.
A lot of this can be seen by snorkeling or scuba diving, glass bottom boats, fake submarines (you sit below the waterline making it seem like you are in a submarine), and even a true submarine that takes passengers down to the depths that the divers explore. Generally the water is very clear, which adds to experience.
Jet skis can be rented at several beaches including Playa Sol and Paradisus. View the island and surrounding area from 400´above the water on a para-sailing excursion! Fishing enthusiasts will find a number of deep sea and bone fishing operators offering ½ day and full day charters. If you don´t like water sports, don´t worry, there´s something for you too. There´s horseback riding, miniature golf, island tours, carriage rides and exploring the Mayan ruins at San Gervasio, plus there are wonderful restaurants and a multitude of stores to keep any shopper busy for days. There's even a new movie theatre on Cozumel when you just want to catch your breath, and golfers will be delighted when the new Cozumel Country Club is scheduled to open by 2002, with a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course.
There are also excursions to the mainland such as Xel-Ha water park near Cancun or the ancient and mystical Mayan ruins of Tulum, Coba and Chitzen Itza. Tours include bilingual guides, transportation, park entrance fees and some include lunch. Tours can be taken by ferry and bus or ferry and air conditioned van. Some tours are also available by plane.
Cozumel hosts many restaurants offering all types of food from Mexican, Seafood, American and Italian to Vegetarian, Mediterranean, and Continental cuisines.
Cozumel also has lots of fun night life! Any night of the week you´re sure to find a party at Carlos and Charlies, Viva Mexico, Neptuno or Café Salsa. On Sunday experience the real Cozumel by joining locals in the traditional Sunday night Fiesta in the main plaza of town. Stroll the plaza with local families and watch the children frolicking in their special Sunday dress, sample traditional food from vendors, watch the artists at work, or dance to the live music.
